HVAC Designer & Energy Modeler (Remote)

Kalos Services is seeking a highly skilled HVAC Designer & Energy Modeler who understands the importance of accurate design and energy modeling to create sustainable, high-performance systems. You’ll work on projects ranging from new installations to retrofit and upgrade designs, focusing on maximizing energy efficiency and indoor air quality. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, detail-oriented, and excited to engage with best practices in building science and HVAC design.

Responsibilities

  • Perform HVAC load calculations and energy modeling using ACCA Manuals (J, D, S) and the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals.
  • Create residential and light commercial HVAC designs in 2D using Wrightsoft and in 3D using Kwikmodel for duct design.
  • Develop and refine ductwork layouts based on field data, including LiDAR 3D data from tools like Conduit Tech and Amply Energy, for precise as-built accuracy.
  • Utilize energy modeling software (such as EnergyGauge) to evaluate design performance, energy savings, and compliance with local and national energy codes.
  • Integrate various system components, including controls, dehumidifiers, HEPA filters, and other IAQ enhancements, to meet project requirements.
  • Use SketchUp and other simple modeling tools to create custom fittings, adapters, and metal designs.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of building science best practices and draw inspiration from industry leaders, including John Semmelhack and Allison Bailes.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in residential and light commercial HVAC design with solid knowledge of ACCA Manuals and ASHRAE guidelines.
  • Experience with energy modeling software (e.g., EnergyGauge) and familiarity with 3D and 2D duct design tools (Kwikmodel, Wrightsoft).
  • Comfort working with LiDAR data from Conduit Tech and Amply Energy to produce detailed, accurate design documents.
  • Ability to integrate HVAC systems with advanced IAQ components and controls.
  • Willingness to learn building science fundamentals, including leading design principles and case studies from prominent industry experts.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills for managing remote work.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with SketchUp and other modeling software to design custom HVAC components.
  • Background in building science and energy efficiency principles.
  • Interest in continuous learning and professional development in HVAC and building science.
