Plumbing FAQs
What is the difference between a traditional water softener and a salt-free water softener?
Calcium and magnesium make water “hard” and can cause buildup in your pipes over time. Water softeners work to prevent this buildup from happening.
Traditional water softeners have resin beads that attract those calcium and magnesium ions and then replace them with sodium. There is a brining tank that requires you to add salt regularly, which is where the sodium ions come from. However, the resin lasts a long time.
Salt-free water softeners are also called scale inhibitors because they don’t actually remove those “hard water” minerals. Instead, they use a medium to alter the minerals so that they can’t stick together and clog your pipes. They often have multi-stage filtration as well, and you don’t have to add salt to them. Both options are reliable and last a long time with proper care.
How often do I need to change the filters on my reverse osmosis (RO) filtration system?
RO systems have a few different filters. The sediment and carbon filters need replacement about every 6–12 months. The RO membrane only needs replacement every 2 years or so. Post-filters should be replaced annually.
